Study helps predict which teens may abuse alcohol later in life Dawn Brazell brazell musc. Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina think if health care providers and parents knew that certain factors influence which 12 year olds grow up to abuse alcohol, they could intervene earlier to target these teens. The list was compiled based on demographic, neuropsychological and neuroimaging factors and computed using complex algorithms.
Perhaps the best introduction to the fundamental attribution error/correspondence bias (FAE/CB) can be found in the writings of the two theorists who first introduced the concepts. Jones coined the term CB and provided a summary of early research that aimed to rule out artifactual explanations of the bias.
The “dark triad” of three personality traits: Sometimes called “dark personality. Psychopathy is a psychological condition in which the individual shows a profound lack of empathy for the feelings of others, a willingness to engage in immoral and antisocial behavior for short-term gains, and extreme egocentricity. Psychopaths do not have the fear response experienced by most of us to the potential negative consequences of criminal or risky behavior and are relatively insensitive to punishment.
They tend not to be deterred from their self-serving behaviors by criminal or social penalties. In conjunction with their unfeeling and incessant drive to take care of themselves, psychopaths are predators, and anyone who can feed their need at the moment is potential prey. Psychopaths are at increased risk of engaging in both reactive and instrumental aggression. Instrumental aggression sometimes called proactive or predatory aggression is planned, controlled, and purposeful, and is used for a particular aim—for example, to get drugs or sex, or just to establish dominance.
The primary goal is not necessarily to injure others but simply to obtain the desired outcome. This isn’t aggression that arises from an emotional reaction; it’s the calculated use of aggression as a tool.

The factors he used to make his predictions were indeed clearly related to why couples ended up divorced. By looking for those factors, he was able to predict divorce fairly accurately. For the Gottman, Katz and Hooven study, where Gottman et. al. picked out all seven divorced couples out of 56, the probability is approximately or.
December 5, , University of Iowa University of Iowa researchers may have come up with the right matchmaking formula for online dating sites: Pair people according to their past interests and online mating success, rather than who they say they’re interested in. Kang Zhao, assistant professor of management sciences in the Tippie College of Business, and UI doctoral student Xi Wang are part of a team that recently developed an algorithm for dating sites that uses a person’s contact history to recommend partners with whom they may be more amorously compatible.
It’s similar to the model Netflix uses to recommend movies users might like by tracking their viewing history. Zhao says he’s already been contacted by two dating services interested in learning more about the model. Since it doesn’t rely on profile information, Zhao says it can also be used by other online services that match people, such as a job recruiting or college admissions.
Zhao’s team used data provided by a popular commercial online dating company whose identity is being kept confidential. It looked at , initial contacts involving 47, users in two U. Of the users, 28, were men and 19, were women, and men made 80 percent of the initial contacts. Zhao says the data suggests that only about 25 percent of those initial contacts were actually reciprocated. To improve that rate, Zhao’s team developed a model that combines two factors to recommend contacts:

Advanced Search Abstract Objective: To investigate the relative contributions of effortful control reflecting the child’s ability to shift and refocus attention and parental coping- and distress-promoting behaviors to children’s coping and distress during the voiding cystourethrogram VCUG, X-ray of the kidneys. Thirty-two children between ages 2 and 7 years were videotaped undergoing the VCUG.
Children manifested relatively high rates of distress and low rates of coping. Their coping attempts were not associated with reduced rates of distress. The most frequent child coping behavior was distraction.

Researchers have invested a great deal of effort in exploring these issues so that we may begin to understand or explain why some individuals engage in sexually abusive behaviors, and so that we are better able to make decisions about the kinds of interventions that may be most effective for certain aspects of this population. This has proven to be much easier said than done, however. Or that the typical rapist is a masked knife—wielding man lurking in a dark alley or hiding behind a bush waiting to jump out and grab an unsuspecting woman who is passing by.
And for a variety of reasons, even some criminal justice professionals may seek to identify such a profile for sex offenders.
With social networking sites such as Facebook and twitter, and online dating sites like and eHarmony, individuals have the ability to create images of themselves for social purposes without being constrained by time or space. Internet users visit social networking sites and create strategic profiles to influence how others perceive them.
Research among adults has shown that younger age is a consistent risk factor for experiencing and perpetrating intimate partner violence. However, no representative epidemiologic studies of lifetime prevalence of dating violence among adolescents have been conducted. After controlling for the effects of potentially confounding demographics and risk behaviors, data from both surveys indicate that physical and sexual dating violence against adolescent girls is associated with increased risk of substance use eg, cocaine use for , odds ratio [OR], 4.
Intimate partner violence IPV against women is a major public health concern. Estimates from a recent large-scale, nationally representative survey 1 indicate that more than 1. Research among adults has shown that younger age is a consistent risk factor for experiencing and perpetrating IPV. Most IPV is directed at women. The rate of violence against females by intimate partners is 3 to 6 times that of IPV against males.
For these reasons, research and prevention efforts are appropriately focused on violence against female partners. A broad range of physical and mental health concerns have been shown to be associated with IPV among women, 13 and similar morbidity risks are considered likely for adolescents. Public health surveillance surveys represent an important opportunity to collect representative data on the extent of behaviors or experiences that threaten the health of young people and to examine associations among these risk factors.
Because lack of such information is a major barrier to improvement of identification, treatment, and efforts to prevent adolescent dating violence, inclusion of queries related to dating violence in such surveys has been recommended.

Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by columnist Maureen Dowd of The New York Times and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian. Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.
Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going. If you explain beautifully, a woman does not look to see whether you are handsome or not — but listens more, so you can win her heart. That is why I advise our boys to read stories and watch movies more and to learn more beautiful phrases to tell girls.
Bio. Dr. Halpern-Felsher is a developmental psychologist whose research has focused on cognitive and psychosocial factors involved in adolescents’ and young adults’ health-related decision-making, perceptions of risk and vulnerability, health communication, and risk behavior.
Relationships and marriages where both partners are kind, nurturing, affectionate, sympathetic, and caring tend to be more satisfying. Despite his somewhat cavalier approach to the subject, Erich Fromm was right—couples who stay together tend to match and be more similar than they are different. It is these similarities and differences that often impact how well two people in a romantic relationship are able to communicate and interact with each other. In addition, each person also brings background influences into the relationship such as family of origin habits and processes.
These components are further examined below. Helpful Information Three Kinds of Premarital Predictors Jeffry Larson and Thomas Holman have conducted the most long-term and specific studies of the premarital predictors of healthy marriages Larson and Holman ; Holman ; Larson They have synthesized these premarital predictors into three general areas: While any number of factors may show some predictive reliability and validity, these three areas, interactional processes, individual traits and behaviors, and background and contextual factors, tend to be the most indicative of future marital quality, stability, and satisfaction.
Understanding the value of how similar backgrounds, traits, and healthy interactional processes can increase the stability of a marriage is important for at least two reasons: First, because low-resource families tend to experience higher levels of stresses and strains compared to high-resource families, they are particularly vulnerable to negative interactional processes that can disrupt functional family patterns and marital relationships Harris et al. Second, understanding the value of these factors makes it clear that researchers, educators, and practitioners must focus at least part of human services programming for both low-resource and high-resource dating couples on healthy interaction and conflict resolution processes specific to individual contexts and differences.
The family of origin is the family a person grows up in. Growing up in a low-resource home, a single-parent home, or a home in which parents divorced, for example, can put adult children at greater risk for marital dissolution Larson and Holman ; Holman ; Larson Early age at marriage, for example, is consistently associated with marital instability and poverty, especially for women.

Top, and Richard J. Deseret Book, , — That prophecy is being fulfilled today. The so-called sexual revolution that started in the s continues to impact society. Young and old alike are bombarded with images of immodesty and immorality. Youth are engaging in premarital sex at earlier and earlier ages. That which was once considered sacred, or at least private, is now spoken of casually and with little reverence. Those who speak up for moral values and advocate chastity before marriage and fidelity within marriage are often put down as being provincial and unsophisticated.
Unfortunately, many parents, school officials, and government leaders seem less concerned with the immorality of premarital sexual behavior than with the social ills that often come with it—teen pregnancies, abortion, and sexually transmitted diseases. Numerous studies chronicle this pervasive culture of sexuality and the damaging effects of premarital sexual activity among teenagers and young adults.
A slight decrease in premarital sex was noted in the Abma report during more recent years. While this modest change is welcome news, parents should not hold out hope that the frequency of teen sex will diminish. These frightening trends generate questions about how Latter-day Saint teens are faring in this morally polluted environment.

A national survey by Pew Research Center, conducted June July 12, , among 2, adults, finds that: The share of to year-olds who report having used online dating has nearly tripled in the last two years. For young adults in particular, this overall increase in online dating usage has been accompanied by a dramatic increase in the use of mobile dating apps. These young adults are now more likely than any other age group to use mobile dating apps.
As was the case in previous Pew Research Center surveys of online dating , college graduates and the relatively affluent are especially likely to know people who use online dating or to know people who have entered into a relationship that began online. Those who have tried online dating offer mixed opinions about the experience — most have a positive outlook, even as they recognize certain downsides Users of online dating are generally positive — but far from universally so — about the pros and cons of dating digitally.
On one hand, a majority of online dating users agree that dating digitally has distinct advantages over other ways of meeting romantic partners: On the other hand, a substantial minority of these users agree that meeting people online can have potential negative consequences: Overall, men and women who have used online dating tend to have similar views of the pros and cons — with one major exception relating to personal safety.

Fact checked by Marie Ellis Certain personality traits are linked to a tendency toward exceedingly selfish behaviors. There may be a huge gap between the selfishness of a narcissist and that of a psychopath, but current research shows that all negative personality traits share the same dark core. New research suggests there is one core factor that drives all negative personality traits: Egoism, Machiavellianism, moral disengagement, narcissism, psychological entitlement, psychopathy, sadism, self-interest, and spitefulness are all negative personality traits recognized in psychology.
The present analyses (1) provide estimates of the lifetime prevalence of physical and sexual dating violence, (2) identify demographic characteristics of those most at risk, and (3) assess dating violence history as a predictor of behaviors related to major areas of adolescent health risk (substance use, unhealthy weight control, sexual risk.
Advanced Search Abstract Knowledge about how race governs partner selection has been predominantly studied in the United States, yet it is unclear whether these results can be generalized to nations with different racial and immigration patterns. Using a large-scale sample of online daters in nine European countries, we engage in the first cross-national analysis of race-related partner preferences and examine the link between contextual factors and ethnic selectivity.
We provide a unique test of contact, conflict, and in-group identification theories. We show that individuals uniformly prefer to date same-race partners and that there is a hierarchy of preferences both among natives and minority groups. Notable country differences are also found. Europeans living in countries with a large foreign-born population have an increased preference for minority groups. The ethnically heterogeneous Swiss population displays the strongest preference for minorities, with the more homogenous Poland, Spain, and Italy, the least.
